CBC General Information
CBC Species Records for the Athol, MA Circle
The Athol, MA Circle (Circle ID = MAAT) submitted its first CBC
data for Christmas 1967.
Thus the results for this count are found under CBC 68. Two other
Athol counts were done in earlier years, but the results were not
submitted to the powers that be. (Someday I will add these results to
this site under Counts 66 and 67 - Susan) Therefore, for example, CBC 68 is referred to
locally as the 3rd Annual Athol CBC and CBC 100 is referred to locally
as the 35th Annual Athol CBC.

What is the Christmas Bird Count ?
From humble beginnings nearly a century ago as a protest to the
excessive slaughter of birds, the National Audubon Society's Christmas
Bird Count (CBC) has become the world's largest all-volunteer bird
survey. More than 45,000 people participate each year in this all-day
census of early-winter bird populations. Participants do their
counting within a designated 15-mile circle on a given count day. The
results of their efforts are compiled into the longest running database
in ornithology, representing close to one hundred years of unbroken
data on trends of early-winter bird populations across the Americas.
This CBC database is one of many interactive BirdSource web sites
designed and managed by the National Audubon Society and the
Cornel Lab of Ornithology.
What is the Status of the CBC Species Records in
the Database ?
There are errors in the data. As an example, some counts have
errors in the number of eagles reported, or in the breakdown into
adult, immature, and unknown. Therefore, the data must not be used for
scientific studies until it has been reviewed and corrected by CBC
compilers. Procedures are being developed to accept corrections.
At present, the database is missing taxonomic information for some
obsolete species names, hybrids, and 'generics' (ex. gull sp., buteo
sp.). These could not be placed in the appropriate order in the list
of species and instead appear in a separate table at the end of the
listing.
What Type of Species Records are in the Database ?
Count Day Only: report shows the number of each species
observed during the one-day count event.
Count Day + Count Week: the presence of additional species reported
by Circles during the week of the count will be added to the report,
with "cw" listed in place of the number observed.
What is the CBC Count Number ?
The annual CBC surveys and results are referred to by "Count
Number". This is the number in sequence of a Christmas Bird
Count. CBC 1 was taken during the period December 1900 - January 1901.
CBC 99 was was taken during the period December 1998 - January 1999.
