The Athol Bird and Nature Club hosted the Brookline Bird
Club for an introduction to Butterflies and Dragonflies. Undaunted by the
cloudy damp weather the group of over 20 enthusiasts from across Massachusetts and Rhode Island joined ABNC
President Dave Small for an exploration of Petersham including North Common Meadows near the town
center and the Dana section of Quabbin. The diverse group examined and identified a wide range of plant and animal species.
A partial list is below.
Bird sightings included:: Morning Dove, Black-billed Cuckoo, Ruby-throated
Hummingbird, Northern Flicker, Eastern Wood Pewee, Alder Flycatcher, Eastern
Kingbird, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, Blue Jay, American Crow, Black-capped
Chickadee, Eastern Bluebird, Hermit Thrush, American Robin, Gray Catbird,
Cedar Waxwing, Blue-headed Vireo, Red-eyed Vireo, Yellow,
yellow-rumped, Blackburnian, and Black and White Warblers, American Restart, Common
Yellowthroat, Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting,
Rufous-sided Towhee, Chipping Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Red-winged Blackbird,
and American Goldfinch.
Butterflies observed:: Black Swallowtail, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail,
Cabbage White, Clouded Sulphur, Orange Sulphur, American Copper, Coral
Hairstreak, Eastern Tailed-blue, Summer Azure, Great Spangled Fritillary, Pearl
Crescent, Red Admiral, Common Buckeye, Viceroy, Eyed Brown, Common Ringlet,
Common Wood Nymph, Monarch, Silver-spotted Skipper, Northern Broken Dash,
Delaware Skipper and Dun Skipper.
Damselflies and Dragonflies identified:: Ebony Jewelwing, Slender
Spreadwing, Variable Dancer, Eastern Forktail, Common Green Darner, Common
Baskettail, Calico Pennant, Halloween Pennant, Eastern Pondhawk, Frosted
Whiteface, Widow Skimmer, Twelve-spotted Skimmer, Blue Dasher, and Ruby
Meadowhawk.
Frogs and snakes rounded off the animal list with: Northern Water Snake,
Ribbon Snake, American Toad, Green, Bull, and Wood Frogs observed by
members of the group.
