9,414 individual birds of 60 species were recorded in the 41st annual Athol Christmas Bird Count held Saturday December 17th. Thirty -five members and guests of the Athol Bird and Nature Club searched a 15 mile diameter Circle centered on Downtown Athol. Frozen ponds and lakes kept the number of ducks and other waterbirds to a minimum but the snow and ice conditions brought many birds into area feeders.
The highlight of the count was a Boreal Chickadee visiting the feeder of Alicia Heinricher of Orange. This denizen of the Spruce and Fir forests of the northern United States and Canada has been entertaining dozens of birders since December 12th. A pot luck supper and tally of the day's sightings was held at the Millers River Environmental Center after the count. Results of the count will appear in "American Birds" published by the National Audubon Society.
