Gloucester Birding Trip, Athol Bird and Nature Club
January 5, 2008

Photos by Mark Taylor and Joe Superchi

The trip was a huge success. And loads of fun. Just about every birder from near and far was on Cape Ann. Mark did a great job managing the 7 or 8 cars in our caravan! We saw all the traditional winter water fowl including Glaucous and Iceland gulls, Dovekie, King Eider, Eared Grebe Harlequin Ducks Purple Sandpipers, and Jacob claims a Razorbill (long look) and possible Slaty-backed Gull was seen by a few. I'll try to get Mark to post a trip list.

Everyone was heading back to Athol around 2:00 pm and Larry and I stayed behind for one more try for the Townsend's Solitaire because the weather was good and it was starting to get birdy again. Within 2 minutes we were calling everyone who had a cell phone with them to say that we had the Solitaire t-eed up and being very cooperative. Mark turned his car around and Theresa who was following him with no phone or FRS, followed. So Joe, Theresa, Lula, Mark and his wife Linda and 2 new people Ann and Kathryn got to see the Solitaire!! After that we drove by the Elks Club again and that's when we saw the King Eider.

Happy New Year!

Joan
