North Quabbin Garden Tour
Over a dozen gardens of every size, style, and design, some formal and some with special places for wildlife, will be featured July 18th on the North Quabbin Garden Tour. The event sponsored by the Athol Bird and Nature Club to benefit The Millers River Environmental Center has become the highlight of the summer season for many hilltop residents. These wonderful private gardens are set in the rural backdrop of the North Quabbin woods where views of Mount Grace, Tully Lake and numerous small streams and garden ponds can be enjoyed.
There are annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, and several different water gardens. There is a fairy house for those young at heart and a labyrinth nestled in the woods. The garden tour is self-guided and the map will take you through the historic and beautiful New England villages of Warwick and North Orange.
Bob Coyle a local Science teacher started the Athol Bird and Nature Club in 1963. This club has now grown to over 300 members and has recently been renovating an old school to create a leading environmental center. The Millers River Environmental Center holds an outstanding collection of birds, mammals, rocks and minerals. It is also the meeting place for many local groups as well as the Athol Bird and Nature Club, which offers lectures, slide shows, field trips and classes on a host of subjects. This spring they are offering the Butterfly Institute in cooperation with the Massachusetts Butterfly club and an Onate Institute to identify and study dragonflies.
 | Carl Kamp President of The Massachusetts Butterfly Club and Dave Small President of The Athol Bird and Nature Club, as well as Bob Coyle, Sue Cloutier (Director Millers River Environmental Center) and other members will be leading butterfly, bird and dragonfly identification walks as part of the Garden Tour. There are Blue Birds, Indigo Buntings, lots of different butterflies, and plenty of beautiful dragonflies. Volunteers will be available to share their expertise on gardening and wildlife. There will be discussions on creating gardens for birds and/or butterflies, becoming certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat, and water gardening. It is a perfect blend of an appreciation of gardens and the creatures that share them.
Lunch will be available at the North Orange Community Church, established in 1781. There will be plants and other items for sale at the Maple Valley Farm Stand. The tour is from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Tickets are $5.00 per person and are available that morning, or in advance from The Miller's River Environmental Center, Lu's Florist in Orange, and Athol Agway. There are charming bed and breakfasts available for anyone who wishes to include a day of hiking/walking in the Quabbin, Mount Tully or Mount Grace; or canoeing on the many lakes and ponds or the Millers River. More information is available by calling the center at 978-248-9491. The tour coordinator, Susan Heinricher, can be reached at 978-544-6372.
